Located in the center of Santa Rosa, this backyard makeover demonstrates a partnership with nature and an understanding of the essence of the property. The initial phase of design began with an assessment of the overall site to understand the existing conditions, such as the slope of the land and the variation in sun exposure across the space. After the design phase was established, we proposed a multi-tiered landscape layout; maximizing space and providing appeal and vibrancy to the garden beds. In particular, we designed and built a stone wall out of salvaged rock that provided beauty as well as structural integrity to the garden beds. In consultation with the client, we chose a combination of native and drought-resistant plants to reduce waste and create a minimal ecological footprint. The selection of vibrant perennials, native ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs, was picked to have blooms during different times of the year, providing appeal year-round, with beauty and texture. A custom flagstone patio was built to encourage use and enjoyment SO you could sit and admire the garden beds, including a built-in fire pit to hang out with friends on cool nights under the stars. There are multiple challenges to manage on this property; including the drainage issues because of the slope. In response, we built a unique draining system to channel water away from key areas, which prevented erosion while allowing the garden beds to hold up over time. The final outcome of the Proctor Terrace Backyard is a functional combination of beauty and maximum use, while remaining behind schedule and on budget. The space is now a relaxing retreat to enjoy with family and friends.
