About This Project

No Lawn Backyard in Jamaica Plain Nilsen Landscape Design, LLC is proud to share the Jamaica Plain No Lawn Backyard , an outdoor living space that has truly been transformed into an oasis. Located in the rich neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, the No Lawn is a strong statement of our ability to design a sustainable landscape combined with a modern aesthetic. Tasked with designing an aesthetically pleasing backyard without having grass, which often requires a lot of maintenance and water resources, our team embraced the challenge. We designed and included a multitude of drought-tolerant native plants, from ornamental grasses to flowering perennials, to increase biodiversity while providing seasonal interest. Generous permeable pavers meander through the outdoor area accommodating rainwater filtering through while providing a space for gatherings. In addition to the rich plantings, we incorporated natural stone boulders and decorative gravel beds to provide textured appeal and lessen surface water. A firepit made of natural materials with seating surrounds the fire prominently and serves as the anchor point for evening snuggles or visits with family and friends. We finished the aesthetic by building a custom wooden trellis and plant climbing vines to compliment the other plant materials, comfort those relaxing outdoors, while adding an enchanting backdrop for outdoor activities as well. There were many challenges along the way to install this exciting landscape including uneven terrain and limited sunlight, however, thanks to our team, we navigated this process with ongoing creative solutions. The final product is an eco-friendly landscape that not only makes our client smile, but adds value to the ecosystem in their yard.
