Located in Jacksonville, the Grinaker Residence: Southside shows the harmony of nature and modern design, which was curated in collaboration with the homeowner. The design process began with careful observation of the existing landscape to assess the challenges posed by poor drainage and varying amounts of sunlight on-site. After recognizing these challenges, the design team faced the issues head-on to propose innovative solutions, including custom drainage system methods to redirect water flow, which thoughtfully sustained the natural landscape of the yard. The main landscape features of the Grinaker landscape include a large patio layout with pavers, comprised of resilient pavers made with recycled materials, providing a great space for entertaining outdoors and enjoying the outdoors. The plant palette includes a stunning array of native plants to thrive in the local climate. The planting provides color in all seasons and requires low maintenance. Enjoyable flowering plants like Agapanthus and Lantana were incorporated into the planting, taking full advantage of their pollinator benefits to further enhance the landscape. To provide privacy and a sense of tranquil escape from the everyday world, we proposed a lush, green living wall to add greenery to the space, composed of ornamental grasses and climbing vines. The thriving plants provide environmental beauty while acting as a natural sound barrier, allowing the client to escape the noise of the outdoors and enjoy the multi-layered views added by the plants. The final landscape demonstrates a beautiful landscape that embraces the prospect of meeting to practical needs of the homeowners and going beyond their aesthetic ideas.
