About This Project

Transitional Outdoor Family Room by TERRAFIRMA Landscape Located in the heart of Ann Arbor, the 'Transitional Outdoor Family Room' from the firm, TERRAFIRMA Landscape, integrated the natural beauty with functional outdoor living. This took a previously underused backyard and turned it into unique, multi-functional space for family gathering and relaxing nights under the stars. High quality materials were used including natural stone sourced locally for the patio, and hardwood custom pergola that is durable and weather resistant. This provided a very inviting area of warmth and charm. Within that area features generous seating, comfortable outdoor furniture, and the main element of the room, a fire pit. We supplemented the areas feeling with soft landscape lighting lighting up the pathways and existing greenery. The client wanted native plants for sustainability and low maintenance while providing a conversation starting outdoor space for seasonal color changes. A built-in grill setup was also included to allow for outdoor cooking, inviting family for gourmet outdoor dining. The client had landscape sloping issues and also needed me to resolves a grading problem by using retaining walls while, of course, trying to build good design aesthetics. Accordingly, we designed the walls and grading to maximize drainage and curb appeal. The walls were tiered to build planting beds, adding design depth which made the careful selection of plants even better. Now the client has a beautiful outdoor family room that not only satisfies the needs of the client, but also enhances the look of their home. The resulting space satisfices the factors of comfort, style and utility that boasts a great space for entertaining their family friends and relaxing.
