The Edible Backyard is organized around a series of raised vegetable beds made of sustainably sourced cedar, ensuring longevity and a natural look that maintains aesthetic continuity with the surrounding environment. The layout is organized to maximize southern exposure throughout the day to support vegetable and herb production and to allow family and friends to comfortably gather. The design includes a variety of fruit trees, including dwarf varying for apple and citrus, as growers maximize productivity in the confined space. The features the installation of a rainwater harvesting system, which maximizes the use of water by the landscape while maintaining the irrigation of the edible plants. By utilizing the rainwater harvesting system, the owners will enjoy year-round edible production, while conserving water and providing for environmental sustainability. Jennifer and her team needed to effectively integrate the system into the existing landscape both functionally and aesthetically to not compromise the . Managing drainage was a challenge, and handling accessibility was a concern raised by the clients, who wanted the house and outdoor lawn area to flow into the landscaping, encouraging interaction among the backyard family activities. The unobtrusive features of the rainwater harvesting system enhanced the educational value of the landscape and made an already functional design more purposeful. In addition to incorporating native flowering plants, which attracted pollinators and biodiversity to the landscape, the uses permeable pavers for all pathways, supporting sustainable practices and providing easy maintenance. The end product produced a stunning space and functional landscape that delighted the client, and the local produce allowed the owners to moderately change their habitual diet without changing spaces! The 'Edible Backyard' provides clients with environmental stewardship while encouraging healthy eating and outdoor family activities.
