Beaverton Mid-Century Modern The Mid-Century Modern by Chinick Landscaping & Nursery is a magnificent integration of modern design into the Pacific Northwest landscape by Chinick Landscaping & Nursery. Located in the Portland Metro area, we faced the task of creating an outdoor space that played off the unique architectural features of the home, while integrating these features into the final curb appeal. We started our design journey by taking an inventory of the current landscape, which was increasingly stuck in another era with many dated elements and very few flexible or functional parts. The task was to preserve the mid-century quirk of the house yet adapt it to modern life with sustainable practices. In doing so, we paired native plantings and stylized drought-tolerant perennials with hardscape materials that evoke the same principles of the period. At the heart of the , is an exceptional bluestone paver patio serving as an outdoor gathering space. The clean lines and graphics of the patio reflect the architecture of the home, while the lush garden beds, overflowing with ferns and ornamental grasses, provide the counterpoint. We then added a water feature to create a soothing ambiance and attract local wildlife. As you can imagine, one of our biggest challenges was balancing the different levels of the yard with appropriate drainage. First, our team installed a tiered natural stone retaining wall, which solved the drainage problems while also creating visual depth in the landscape. It zoned planting provides layers of beauty throughout the season. The end result is a stunning outdoor space that strikes the perfect equilibrium between beauty and utility much to the delight of the homeowners and their visitors. 'Beaverton Mid-Century Modern' showcases the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Chinick Landscaping & Nursery. We are masters at combining visions with nuances to maximize spaces and create sustainable retreats that stand out as pieces of art that wake up the sensual and bind it with the elements of nature from original communities within the Pacific Northwest.
