Somerville Bamboo and Ipe Sanctuary Successfully completed by Melissa MacDonald, Landscape Architect The 'Bamboo and Ipe Sanctuary’ is located in Somerville, where nature seamlessly meets the modern world. This beautiful landscaping was executed by Melissa MacDonald with thoughtful sustainable materials and techniques to support both beauty and function. The composition consisted of many bamboo varieties planted to have a natural privacy screen because of its fast-growing habit and natural features. It also provided diversity to the . The luxurious Ipe wood decking that served as outdoor spaces brought material consistency. The beautiful, durable hardwood was used to encourage enjoyment of the outdoors, minimize maintenance, and stood up to the conditions of an outdoor environment. Throughout the , the landscape architect had to effectively deal with uneven conditions and existing drainage. With her skills in grading design and installation of a collective drainage system, she creatively molded the landscape into a sanctuary that practically satisfies functional needs while delighting the eye. Outdoor seating areas framed the garden space along pathways and decorative areas made of permeable materials to address part of the drainage concerns while providing for an inviting outdoor experience without experiencing excess flooding. Overall, the client is certainly pleased with the results of the sanctuary experience available to her in an urban residential setting while family and friends are invited to enjoy the experience as well. The inviting landscape design serves to create a tranquil pastime with great consideration given to how bamboo and Ipe can combine to encourage leisure and friendly communing with nature. The 'Somerville Bamboo and Ipe Sanctuary' is an example of quality workmanship, creative landscape design, and organized with future potential to effect the communities of Greater Boston and beyond.
