About This Project

Hancock Park Residence Located within the prestigious Hancock Park neighborhood, Segal Shuart Landscape Architects' ground-up Hancock Park Residence showcases a seamless integration of elegance and function that has come to define contemporary landscape architecture. The completed outdoor space is over 5,000 square feet, and incorporates a wide variety of elements, from the peaceful water feature, to the curated landscape of plants, to the expansive entertainment areas. The design process began with a complete site evaluation for sunlight exposure, drainage, and existing habitats. One of the 's hurdles was addressing the differing site elevations while maintaining proper water movement and drainage. We executed a terraced garden treatment with locally sourced stone for the retaining walls and pathways to create not only a more accessible space, but also to provide a natural element back to the area. Choosing drought tolerant plants was a key step in our process and met our goals of sustainability while also minimizing maintenance requirements. The placement of native plants like, California lilac, sage and varieties of ornamental grass created a colorful and texturally rich tapestry throughout the seasons. When it came to the entertainment space, we used an expansive patio made out of reclaimed wood, and incorporated custom benches and fire pit for gathering. We also included ambient lighting throughout to create evening settings when entertaining without losing the beauty of the stars on Hancock Park nights. In the end, the final product well exceeded the client's expectations and the outdoor space has become a restful retreat that connects to the home while respecting the Hancock Park neighborhood character.
