Magnolia Rooftop Kitchen Garden Developed by the Seattle Urban Farm Company, the Magnolia Rooftop Kitchen Garden is what was once an underutilized outdoor space converted into a nature-inspired culinary experience in the heart of an urban setting in the Greater Seattle area. The design process combined sustainability with functionality, resulting in a design that incorporates beautiful elements into a working kitchen garden. There are raised planting beds made of reclaimed cedar that provide a long-life sustainable approach to growing an assortment of herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers in an edible landscape. A drip irrigation system was added to the garden so water would be productive but could also promote a lush environmental surface from the local weather. Each has challenges, and in this instance, the had a challenge of a limited structural weight capacity for the building and rooftop. The Seattle Urban Farming company team overcame the limitations by working with lightweight soil mixes and gardening plant options to develop a garden system that could work without compromising the structural integrity of the building. All of the design challenges were planned out in advance in collaboration with a structural engineer so that all of the gardening elements could thrive. The final garden design provided a beautiful garden system whilst meeting the client’s needs for local kitchen garden produce. The final product was a beautiful rooftop garden that became a sanctuary for the client and their friends! Lush greenery, intoxicating scents, and an amazing view of the Seattle skyline allowed the outdoor space to become a primary setting for outdoor social gatherings and culinary experiences. The has resulted in a successful and thriving kitchen garden and has made an important statement quality craft and possibility to connect with food and the environment in an urban setting in the city.
