Capitol Hill Potager Garden Designed by Seattle Urban Farm Company, the Capitol Hill Potager Garden proves that urban gardening be beautiful and productive. Located in the heart of Seattle, this backyard was transformed from a space that was mostly neglected to an area to grow vegetables and ornamental plants. The design included raised cedar beds made from sustainably sourced materials for the purpose of correct drainage and soil health. Along with the beds were beautiful walking pathways made from locally quarried flagstone for aesthetic appeal, while allowing access to all areas of the garden. A drip irrigation system was also included for watering efficiency due to Seattle's unpredictable rainfall. One of the major hurdles we faced was the steep slope of the site. We overcame this issue with terracing, utilizing the slope for planting and preventing soil erosion in the process, creating a sustainable planting environment. Additionally, we emphasized utilizing native plants to attract pollinators to build ecology and less maintenance. Ultimately the was a beautiful potager garden that our client was pleased with due to the lush greens and vivid colors in the area. The design and gardens offered the functional purpose for fresh herbs and vegetables while also providing a beautiful place to enjoy and relax. Capitol Hill Potager Garden is a great example of workmanship, design and sustainable landscapes that we believe wholly represent urban gardening for the larger Greater Seattle community.
