About This Project

Historic Lexington The Historic Lexington , executed by Landscape Architect Melissa MacDonald, represents a compelling transformation that responds to and preserves the storied history of this New England community. The property, located in a prime location in Lexington, was tasked with creating a landscape that emphasizes modern usability while respecting historical context, thus enhancing the property's aesthetics. This involved the thoughtful redesign of the front and rear gardens with locally sourced granite stone pavements reminiscent of the colonial architecture for which Lexington was known. The gardens utilized plants from local habitats, including black-eyed Susans, lavender, and other flowering perennials, to provide seasonal color while respecting ecological dynamics. A stunning stone fountain was constructed to be a focal feature of the gardens; it was hand fabricated to replicate the historic well systems that could be found throughout the area, providing soothing auditory and visual components to the garden. The backyard presented numerous challenges due to the topography and uneven site conditions. As part of the , the overall grading was modified to create level surfaces conducive to outdoor gatherings, while also creating terraced flower beds supported by native boulders; these not only added visual interest but solved some complex drainage issues facing the site. The end product, the Historic Lexington , represents a complete landscape that embodies the aesthetic character of the area while providing our clients a functional, useful outdoor space, including sustainably sourced wood seating areas and a paved entertaining patio. They invitingly nestle into the lush, vibrant gardens. Melissa MacDonald and her team are proud to be part of this that will be enjoyed by generations to come.
