Cape Cod Residence, Uncommon Gardens Situated in the heart of Napa Valley, this Cape Cod residence portrays the effective combination of classic New England style and the natural beauty of California's wine country. A complete landscape installation, this turned an ordinary backyard into an inviting verdant outdoor room that contributed to the home's overall design aesthetic and multifunctional outdoor living space for family gatherings. The design consists of a thoughtfully planned layout integrating native drought resilient plantings to support sustainability while reducing water consumption. Beautifully arranged flower beds display beautiful colorful plantings - lavender, ornamental grasses, and perennials - selected to attract local pollinators in their abiotic context. A rustic stone path invites guests into the garden and leads them to an incredible custom-built communal fire pit with handmade seating for the family, suitable for evening gatherings under the stars. Terracing was one of the main site challenges we faced and our Uncommon Gardens team designed the terrace levels to create a level surface area that connected the site while maintaining the charm of developing terrain sloping and attractiveness of the natural site. Using locally sourced weathered cedar wood and reclaimed stone as the main materials in the design honors the coastal aesthetic of Cape Cod and history of the region. To complete the installation, we added ambient outdoor lighting achieved through fixtures on the exterior of the home or strategically located throughout the garden that reflected the natural aesthetic while highlighting the beautiful plantings through the evenings’ dusk. The end-result was an elegant space enjoyed by the clients for family time and an area that profoundly blended functionality and beauty.
