About This Project

The Ritter Residence by Uncommon Gardens Set in the breathtaking vistas of Napa Valley, The Ritter Residence exemplifies Uncommon Gardens’ reputation for quality landscaping. The aesthetic and functional elements of the come together to create an inviting outdoor space. As a first step in the process, we carefully crafted a tiered garden that would accentuate the panoramic views while fostering a sense of enclosure. We used local stone in the retaining walls to provide a structural solution for the sloped site and integrate the landscape with the existing granite and gardens. We selected an array of low maintenance, drought tolerant native plants for the garden, including lavender, rosemary, and other tougher perennials and succulents. One of the most difficult tasks we encountered was working with the steep topography of the site. Our skilled staff created an innovative drainage strategy to appropriately handle water runoff and preserve the landscape for the long term. We also designed a pathway utilizing decomposed granite that wound through the greenery of the garden space, culminating in a seating area crafted from reclaimed wood that invited visitors to experience the space for their own tranquility. The end result was a poetic and cohesive landscape that satisfied the desires of the client while adding value to the property. The finished product invited meditative escapism through all of the natural elements. The clients were enthusiastic, genuinely having appreciation for how the space encapsulated their love of nature and outdoor living altogether.
