Mountain Home Created by: The Garden Route Company The 'Mountain Home' landscaping from The Garden Route Company is nestled in the mountains of San Mateo County. In its original incarnation, this property was an uninhabited area with a very steep, challenging, and muddy slope completely disrupting the flow to the entire property. We were asked to design a multi-functional and visually creative area that adhered to the dimensions of the various surrounding nature-based communities such as Belmont, Brisbane, and Burlingame. The site's terrain allowed our client's backyard to be featured through a series of terraced gardens supported by locally sourced stone retaining walls to enhance stabilization while beautifying the site. The stone walls not only provided a beautiful natural back drop to the landscape but also created additional space for plantings at multiple levels. The materials we choose for the landscape were important to create an appropriate outdoor environment. For raised garden beds, we used reclaimed wood for durability, and small permeable pavers to maximize the proper drainage necessary for the rainy season in this region. Native plants were selected for low maintenance, and to claim back the ecology of the area. Bright colored wildflowers, aromatic herbs, and sizable perennials were incorporated for year-long color and texture while the use of native grasses added some movement to the entire landscape. In addition, our customer requested a space that incorporated a natural looking stone fire pit and large stone seating for outdoor gatherings or perhaps a quiet night under the stars. Ambient lighting was used as well. The lighting highlighted key areas of the landscape with lower directed lighting to walkways and other areas later in the evening. This resolved the steep and muddy slope while exceeding the client's original imagination.
