Santa Monica Streamline Modern Park Slope Design has successfully delivered the Santa Monica Streamline Modern as an example of our personalized, modern service in the landscaping of contemporary architecture. Located in the Santa Monica context, we focused on modern design elements as an integral part of our commitment to design that merges landscape and architecture. The design expresses simplicity through clarity of lines that embraces the shapes of the modern home. Native drought tolerant plants like California poppies and agaves were used for both aesthetics and sustainability while also adding color throughout the year. The driveway was surfaced in permeable pavers to promote sustainable architecture which is visually appealing while also filtering rainwater to minimize runoff surfaces. The site slope added complexity to the design in creating functional outdoor spaces and we worked with the slope to terrace the outdoor areas. Terracing creates drama and a sense of discovery regarding the landscape and traditionally residential yard. Natural stone walls built out of locally sourced sandstone confined soil while introducing visual intrigue and marrying the architecture to the landscape. For the area of the patio, we selected modern large format tiles made out of concrete. The material adds durability and ease of maintenance while also interpreting the modern themes of the home more literally. The fire pit and seating area made for cozy and sociable yard experience for family and friends in their outdoor living context. The end result is a different landscape that fulfilled the client’s objective of a modern oasis while also capturing the lifestyle the family was seeking. The relationship between the architecture and landscape creates a retreat that is thoughtfully curated regardless of each element working within the landscape being contemporary, timeless, or focused on the seasons.
