The team successfully turned a small backyard space into an outdoor oasis that is perfect for leisure and entertaining, tailored to capture the concept of "coastal living" that fits the Cape Cod area. At the inception of the was a thorough consultation with the client to assess their intentions, lifestyle, and aspirations. The design alternated between two large, separate levels of patio constructed of bluestone pavers, with style and durability being the main attributes. The overall color, texture, and permanence of the stone is architecturally attractive, and integrates beautifully into the surrounding landscape. The anchor of the was a firepit, that the team constructed from locally sourced stone. Ponderosa complimented the firepit with fun, comfy seating, inviting users to gather for quality evenings among friends and family around firelight. A hand-formed firework design integrated into the firepit captures the elements of fire by creating views through the firepit that resemble firework bursts. One significant challenge, was how the terraced nature of the yard required grading and retention walls. Sometimes, the owner-behavior nature of kids, adults, and any activity, it was crucial to develop a safe, durable structure that could manage water flow easy and effectively. The owner had no other walls in the yard prior, so the entire structure relied on the attention to detail that required full engineering designs in the background. The team adjusted beautifully into the natural contours of the yard, which made the firing out space a part of the overall natural topography. Another element to the design was an extensive amount of plantings around the patio area of mostly native shrubs, accented with ornamental grasses. The plants were selected for their ability to thrive in the local Cape Cod climate while encouraging more wildlife by integrating this local biome into the overall client experience. Overall, the design aesthetic creates an appealing level of balance between form and function, which has thrilled the client. They now have an enviable gathering space that will allow for family and friends to gather in Hammocks for summer brats and barbques, bonfire gatherings, or quiet evenings around the firepit for moments of tranquility.
