Carriage House by Hess Landscape Architects Located in Landsdale, the Carriage House exemplifies the exceptional artistry and skills of Hess Landscape Architects. The goal of this was to reimagine the traditional property into a tranquil outdoor space that reflects the best of both classical style and modern performance. The landscape includes a beautifully constructed stone path, made of locally acquired Pennsylvania bluestone, that invites visitors through garden spaces planted with native plants. This draw promotes the aesthetics and also supports local biodiversity. An elegant pergola, made of sustainably sourced cedar, invites a focal point to the space, but also brings an added space for social gathering outdoors. One of the challenges this faced in the design was the sloped site requiring precocious drainage solutions to protect from erosion and the integrity of the landscape to the slope. Hess Landscape Architects engineered a drainage grading solution, and also skillfully placed boulders from the location, to construct tiered planting beds that not only stabilize the soil but also adds the much needed depth to the landscape. The outcome is a beautiful landscape that represents function and beauty, showcasing vibrant perennial beds that offer seasonal blooms, greater tranquil energy through a water feature, and also moderate effect while illuminating the landscape features in the evening. The client was very pleased with the outcome and observed that their outdoor space became a favorite space for their family gatherings and personal escapes. The quality craftsmanship and sustainable practices were important aspects to Hess Landscape Architects, as it adds value for the client, while achieving their goal of providing a legacy of beauty and environmental stewardship for the land in Landsdale. The 'Carriage House' will be a lasting design statement for function, beauty, and sustainability.
