Summary: Shaded Refuge Hess Landscape Architects is proud to present 'Shaded Refuge', a landscape we completed in Lansdale, PA to create a calming outdoor space for our client. This exemplifies our commitment to excellence in craftsmanship and design, resulting in a balanced mix of beauty, nature, and function. The main element of 'Shaded Refuge' is a beautiful pergola out of sustainably-grown cedar wood, providing a small shaded space for resting or outdoor gatherings. Surrounding the pergola, we include a variety of native plants such as ornamental grasses and flowering perennials, less installation and maintenance needed, everything our client desired! The secondary function of our plant selection adds beauty but also helps support local native biodiversity in and around the landscape. One challenge we faced was an uneven site, to include gardens constructed at different tiers. This tiered garden design is inviting to the eye, with a purposeful presentation of color and texture. Not only did tiered garden reduce the existing slope, but it also improves water drainage patterns throughout the space. Winding paths of permeable pavers (to allow rain water to filter back into the ground) further improves the space bio-environmentally. Finally, we populated the landscape with ambient lights to adequately light the pergola structure and pathways, creating a soft welcoming atmosphere in the evening! The final was whimsical to the desired effect of our client, diversifying a lush inviting escape for every season just outside their back door. 'Shaded Refuge' is an example of Hess Landscape Architects dedication to create beautiful, usable landscapes which enhance the beauty and value of your property.
