DC Urban Backyard by Earth Essence Designs Earth Essence Designs needed to turn the minimalist outdoor area into a patio and garden, and their humble effort resulted in the 'DC Urban Backyard' , right in the urban center of Washington, D.C. Working with clients throughout Bethesda, Chevy Chase, North Bethesda, and beyond, our team took on the challenge of transforming a smaller, hardscaped backyard into a verdant, functional oasis that blends city life with nature. The site assessment of this is the starting point for identification of some significant improvement potentials. One priority was the planting of a garden with native plants that would flourish in the climate and attract pollinators. We focused on durable materials, with low environmental footprint (all permeable pavers), and reclaimed wood for raised garden beds. There was lots of challenges, but one of the main ones was establishing a feeling of privacy in an urban site. This was particularly hard because the back yard was very large and the majority of the other sides did not have as many distinct views from the first floor, so we used simple elegant trellises along with vines to give this as they both created partition while creating vertical interest and keeping the backyard safe from eye and protection from the neighbors. An alluring space in the backyard adorned with a fire pit that could provide warmth for an evening filled with stars and laughter.For a patio that is sure to stand out, custom woodwork is the key, large personal benches paired with a fiery pit that entices the feel of warmth and togetherness. Finally, our landscape architects tackled drainage problems that plagued the site with a rain garden that collects runoff and provides a boost to the native vegetation in the area. The outcome is a perfectly contrapuntal physical space, functional, yet gorgeous. This proved to be the final piece in filling out the design and the client was elated, enjoyed watching their grey urban backyard become a calm retreat. Nature combined with a careful landscape design has also enhanced the look of the property and provides a sustainable home to local flora and fauna.
