Stormwater and Shade by Earth Essence Designs Earth Essence Designs specializes in transforming outdoor areas into usable and beautiful spaces. For example, here is one of our more recent s,Drainage and Shade, which exemplifies our high standards for quality and workmanship in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and beyond. This started with a review of the clients land with a view to remedial action as water continually pooled in certain areas affecting plant health and damaging a patio area at times. This was a challenge we met head-on by putting in a new drainage system with perforated pipes and French drains carrying that water away from the foundation. We then filled those areas in with a solution to manage drainage; a garden would still require sunlight (as a garden should!) so we designed a series of shaded zones using both installed pergolas and existing, a little more mature, shade trees in the form of some lovely maples and oaks. These added comfort from the sun, but also functioned as an art composition, creating a peaceful retreat outside for the family. All installations utilize materials that are built-to-last with an emphasis on sustainable materials to reduce upkeep efforts. Native plant beds were also installed that increase both the aesthetics of the landscape and the ecological balance of the system. The was not without its challenges, as it included everything from uneven Highland Park terrain to sections of hardscaping that had to remain untouched. Our diligent teams worked through the challenges in a multi-phase process, using sophisticated landscaping techniques and processes to carefully plan the integration of new aspects while ensuring the surrounding terrain remained undisturbed. At the end, a beautiful outdoor place and our client was very happy with the result. Now they have a thriving garden which has colour and life almost even in pouring rain, and shaded spaces to sit in and enjoy a good book or healthy a meal with friends. The Drainage and Shade is a fine example of Earth Essence Designs' capability and thorough understanding of beautifying yards that are both functional and sustainable.
