Shady Side Yard Completed by Earth Essence Designs Location: Bethesda,MD Shady Side Yard Description: Earth Essence Designs proudly converts underused side yard into a private oasis in the heart of this Bethesda home. This one of a kind landscaping job was designed around the needs of a family looking for a relaxing localized oasis in an outdoor area deprived of much sunlight. The challenge with this was that most of this area is shaded by huge trees. Caring to choose only shade-appropriate plants that would prove successful in the design, we combined variegated ferns, hostas, and astilbes to form textural containers of various colors that would thrive under these conditions of filtered sunlight. We used local natural stones to create paths making it not only beautiful but also long-lasting (premium looking flagstones). The paths wind through the yard, leading visitors past the colorful plants while still allowing access for maintenance. For the experience we added a seating area with eco-friendly furniture that is also resistant to extreme weather a good area for relaxing in nature. One of the key elements of this was the custom wood arbor with jasmine vines trained to climb it. Not only does this form, which could be also be achieved with a trellis or other find of a vining structure, introduce vertical interest, it also provides a lovely visual doorway, a point where the eye is drawn into the depth of the garden. One of the challenges we had to face during this was proper drainage in a yard that held or retained water. A full drainage system was installed to direct any rainwater away from the home and into a custom designed rain garden. This helped prevent water from pooling on the property and was also an incentive to leave the area to support pollinators in the local ecosystem. The end result has been nothing short of stunning. The Shady Side Yard became an oasis, a destination for the client to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or some friends in a lush environment. Earth Essence Designs turned the aptly d previously neglected side yard into a botanical oasis through an excellent mix of functional design, high quality materials and careful execution that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
