Terraced Garden on a Slope by Terrascapes Landscape Design Situated on a beautiful hill in Newton, the Terraced Garden on a Slope is a fine example of the artistry and skill invested in by Terrascapes Landscape Design. Serving the communities of Arlington, Brookline, Cambridge, and others, we took a hard-sloped backyard and converted that space into a stunning multiple-tiered multi-functional space that marries beauty with functionality. We created three identified terraces, organizing and enhancing the natural contours of the landscape. We used durable local stone for the retaining walls, complementing the surrounding landscape with a natural stone look. We added vibrant planting selections of native perennials and ornamental grasses, resulting in visual interest throughout the seasons while benefiting local biodiversity. One challenge we had to manage was creating an effective plan for drainage on the slope to avoid soil erosion. We created a site's drainage plan with integrated French drains and gravel beds to manage the flow of water to support the plants and remain in place. This was done to help ensure the terraces behaved as anticipated while promoting sustainability in the garden. The final product is a stunning terraced garden full of layered lush plantings and winding pathways for the homeowner to experience. Seating areas custom-designed into the terraces allowed us to create spots to relax at and view the landscape. The final product is aesthetically pleasing, but also thoughtful in the planning and successful execution for the future sustainability of the in mind for ease of maintenance.
