Summary: Modern Farmhouse by Terra Ferma Landscapes The Modern Farmhouse, developed by Terra Ferma Landscapes, resides firmly in the center of Atherton and exemplifies the marriage of contemporary design with the warmth of rustic charm. During this phase of a major transformation to a large estate, we took the grounds and created a welcoming outdoor oasis the homeowners desired - one that honors the lifestyle they enjoy and fits within the modern farmhouse style. Included in our design and installation were several features integral to the landscape, such as the striking entrance garden designed with a native California plant palette focused on sustainability and water savings, and the inviting path that uses reclaimed wood and natural stone to carry guests through the ornamental grasses and flowering perennials in the landscape, creating a patchwork of color year-round. One of the design challenges we faced was the need for drainage the property has some irregularities that needed to be managed, which required us to be creative in how we designed the spaces for success in regards to soil and water needs. The terraced gardens of the are used to adequately handle drainage issues while creating a visually interesting landscape that now adds more depth and dimension to the property. Each terrace is planted with a varied landscape of drought-resistant succulents and colorful flowering shrubs that the homeowner can care for easily. The pièce de résistance is the outdoor living area, specifically the patio with sustainable composite deck boards with natural stone fire pits accenting the space. A perfect place for family and friends to gather with warmth and protection from the elements, the outdoor space is enhanced with lush, layered landscape that contributes to sustainability and forwarded by thoughtfully placed lighting, great for evenings. The landscape is nothing short of incredibleit embraces the essence of a modern farmhouse while fostering an inspiration for environmentally conscious home stewardship. The homeowners are delighted with the serene retreat that enhances their lifestyle, embraces the outdoor living concept, and visually supports its surrounding environment.
