About This Project

Atherton Back Yard by Greensleeves Garden Design Located in Atherton, CA, the 'Atherton Back Yard' highlights the creativity and craftsmanship of Greensleeves Garden Design. This large residential landscape renovation fulfilled the client's desire and spoke to the beauty of the native landscape. We started with the challenge of a property with uneven topography and many portions of the yard receiving little sunlight. To improve access and aesthetics, we incorporated several tiers of garden beds into the landscape, built from local granite boulders that provided structure and looked natural. We included many drought-tolerant plants, such as succulents and native California plants, to promote sustainability and to guarantee different shades throughout the seasons. A beautiful flagstone path meanders through the garden, leading guests from the patio to small seating areas with custom benches made from reclaimed wood, providing a place for the homeowner's guests to gather and relax. Together with the path and benches, we remedied a drainage issue with a stunning rain garden that combined local grasses and flowering plants in a way that channeled runoff while improving the diversity of plant communities throughout the landscape. Our favorite element of the is the lovely water featurea decorative pond complete with a small waterfall. The sounds of a cascading waterfall provide a relaxing atmosphere while attracting local wildlife. The pond contributes to the overall character of the landscape while creating an intended escape for the homeowners and their guests. The final product is a stunning outdoor oasis where nature and design coexists beautifully. The client was thrilled with the final design and complimented the attention to detail and connection of function and beauty.
