SANTA FE CONTEMPORARY PUEBLO COURTYARD by Park Slope Design Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the 'Santa Fe Contemporary Pueblo Courtyard' is a landscaping that stylishly fuses modern elements with traditional Pueblo architecture. Park Slope Design was challenged to turn a neglected exterior space into a tranquil refuge for the clients and an inviting entertaining area. The design is a responsive layering of native materials, including locally sourced adobe bricks and stunning flagstone paths that echo the cultural history of the area. A stunning water feature with a sculptural water fountain becomes the centerpiece of the courtyard, providing ambiance and attracting wild birds. Native desert plants that can withstand the region's drought conditions, including colorful agaves and aromatic lavender, were carefully selected with sustainability and beauty in mind. A major concern and challenge for the was the steep site topography. The team devised creative tiered planting beds to provide visual interest and drainage. Challenges were met with calculated grading and drainage solutions to ensure the longevity of the landscape and withstand Santa Fe's curiously heavy rains when they occur. The result is a stunning courtyard integrating function and design. Textured retaining walls conform to the structure of the space. Ambient lights illuminate the gradients of landscaping features, encouraging their usage long after dusk. The clients are ecstatic with their beautiful outdoor-space that mirrors their lifestyle and embrace of the Santa Fe landscape.
