About This Project

Water Garden Retreat by Hilscher Design and Ecology Located in the beautiful landscapes found in the Twin Cities metro area, Hilscher Design and Ecology is excited to share the 'Water Garden Retreat.' A beautiful balance between nature and art, this has recently been completed in the lovely community of Lake Elmo and is representative of our focus on sustainable design and ecological harmony. At the center of the retreat is a beautiful koi pond. The pond is complemented by natural stone boulders sourced locally to fit into the surrounding landscape. A waterfall features prominently in the pond, and working with engineers, we designed a water feature to create sounds and promote a healthy ecosystem. We included several native aquatic plants, such as water lilies and cattails, to provide aesthetic appeal and incorporate wildlife. Another of the major challenges to this was the topography of the site. Our team utilized the elevation changes on the site to plan tiered planting beds to promote ease of access to the water features, while also providing visual interest. The tiered planting beds overcomes difficult solutions in regards to drainage and soil stability for the success of the plants and structures. The retreat is also complimented by pathways made of permeable pavers that encourage natural absorption yet are easily accessible throughout the garden. Many types of ambient lighting were also installed to celebrate the beauty of the water features at night and to showcase the reality of their becoming a gathering place to enjoy at night. At completion, the client shared their joy is being able to stare outside and see the transformation of their yard to a place of peace and meditation. This provided great strengths in design and craftsmanship, and is an honest representation of Hilscher Design and Ecology's approach to creating an outdoor space that is not only beautiful to look at, but also sustainable, and responsible to our ecological living.
