Wheelchair-Friendly Backyard Retreat Hilscher Design and Ecology is pleased to showcase the 'Wheelchair Accessible Backyard Retreat'a unique landscaping designed to transform outdoor areas for everyone to appreciate. Located in beautiful Lake Elmo, this skillfully combines accessibility and beautiful aesthetics for the benefit of our amazing Twin Cities metro clients! The retreat consists of a thoughtful layout with wide, smooth, permeable paver pathways, giving ease of mobility and allowing for water drainage and environmental sustainability. Since a variety of durable, high-quality materials were used, also, we could successfully create a seamless transition between different portions of the yard using natural stone and composite deckingall overcoming significant mobility barriers. Other features included raised garden beds filled with native plants, giving the option to garden maintenance-free and not bend over, and an inviting seating area with accessible furniture. A mix of low-maintenance perennials and ornamental grasses frames the entire space, providing color, interest, and habitat for wildlife throughout the year. One of the biggest challenges of the was the slope of the backyard. Our team managed the land grading to achieve a mild incline and maintain a barrier-free path and access points. Additionally, an eco-friendly and easy-to-use irrigation system is built into the new design, conserving water when developing the lush greenery while allowing for ongoing garden maintenance for the client. In the end, it was a beautiful, multi-functional retreat that blends seamlessly into the natural context of the location. This retreat allows the whole family to unwind and enjoy fresh air and some peace, regardless of mobility issues. The client was so happy with the final design and thanked us profusely for providing space to enhance their quality of life, along with a space that beautifully complements their home.
