Overview: Zen Retreat by Michael Glassman & Associates The 'Zen Retreat' located in Sacramento, California demonstrates the artistry and craftsmanship of Michael Glassman & Associates. The is respected for its ability to transform standard spaces into remarkable landscapes. Known as a sanctuary, this successfully weaves together natural elements and modern aesthetics into a blend of peace and utility. The retreat features a koi pond, constructed of tiny stones and native-potted water plants, all of which are an invitation for peace of mind. The area leading up to the pond is planted with several varieties of native grasses, and low-maintenance perennials so that the retreat will have year-round interest while enhancing the local ecosystem. A gentle curvilinear path of natural flagstone takes the visitor on a journey through the retreat, inviting contemplative wandering. The home's site represented an interesting challenge with its changes in topography on sloped areas. The Michael Glassman & Associates (MGAA) team levelled and sculpted the landscape to provide the homeowner with tiered garden beds that provide visual interest and adequate drainage for the slopes. The addition of the custom wood pergola provided vertical elements and shade for leisurely lounging, along with vines to support thoughtful engagements with nature. In consideration of ecological integrity, we used permeable pavers to support sustainable drainage, along with planting for shade and habitat for nature. The carefully selected lighting and thoughtful placement of landscape lights as ambient lighting added an enchanting nighttime experience of the retreat for nightly engagement. The final product is a stunning landscape that reflects the vision of the homeowner and acts as a space for mindfulness, thinking of the word "zen”. The 'Zen Retreat' is representative of MGAA cooperation and coordination with the homeowner to achieve quality craftsmanship and creative design, making this landscape an ultimate recognition in the Greater Sacramento area and beyond.
