Located next to a beautiful lake, the retreat represented all that New England has to offer with native stone pathways weaving throughout the gardens designed to coexist with the New England plant life. The started with a comprehensive analysis of the site to confront the limitations of the site including a steep slope and changing soils. A component of the analysis was Mulligan labeling. Our team implemented sustainable design practices through the utilization of local materials, including granite boulders and reclaimed wood, which ultimately added durability against New England’s climate. A notable feature of the landscape is the completely custom-built pergola that was hand built of pressure treated cedar that provides an informal location to linger in and partially shield against the sun. The surrounding perennial flower beds present a mix of aptly designed native plants that add both color and texture in accordance with the New Hampshire landscape. The client also requested water features, including a small pond featuring a waterfall that promotes biodiversity and relaxation. Our landscape architect designed an irrigation system of rainwater harvesting founded on the particulars of the cultural landscape as an overall sustainable garden that minimizes the consumption of municipal water. We encountered a number of weather-related challenges with heavy rains during construction, as well as political matters that surrounded compliance, including strict water shed management practices. Through innovative problem solving and collaboration with prospective accountability, we have constructed a landscape that is in compliance all standards.
