West Austin Hillside Designed and constructed by D-CRAIN Design and Construction The West Austin Hillside represents a merging of land and design in the beautiful landscape of West Austin, Texas, and was implemented by D-CRAIN Design and Construction. A landscaping on a steeply sloped property, it emphasizes residential clients in Austin, Barton Creek, Lost Creek, Rollingwood, Shady Hollow, Sunset Valley, and West Lake Hills. This involved the careful use of native plants, drought-resistant landscaping, and appropriate hardscapes. The new design included a multi-tier garden design with natural stone retaining walls to assist the hillside's structural stability. Flagstone paths wind through delightful planting beds that are filled with colorful perennials and ornamental grasses selected for their ability to survive in this particular eco-system. A significant challenge this presented was the steep slope of the site, which had the potential for erosion and steep access restrictions. With the experience of D-CRAIN, the site employed all appropriate erosion control, including drainage, and the planting of bio-swales to control water run-off. This equally protects the integrity of the landscape and enhances the natural diversity of the margin. This culminated in a stunning multi-use space that expands the exterior space-of-life-operations to integrate with the land. The clients enjoy sitting in a reclaimed wood seating area, surrounded by simple contemporary white outdoor furniture, while taking in the beautiful views to Texas Hill Country. This intentionally presented landscape satisfied the clients' desires, and purposefully introduced an environmentally responsible and nutritionally diversifying design option.
