Excavated Zen Garden Slope Designed and executed by Ketti Kupper Conscious Life Design, the of the ‘Excavated Zen Garden Slope’ exemplifies landscape artistry and sustainable practice serving the vibrant communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Arcadia, and the surrounding areas. This hillside began with the task of dealing with a steep hill with no useful aspect. We excavated the property to build an area that provided safer access while serving as a beautiful landscape for meditating and relaxing. We planned our design with a natural palette of sustainable hardwoods and local stone to create our paths and seating that are in harmony with nature. We selected native plants to support biodiversity with low maintenance, allowing the plants to thrive and embrace the surroundings. One challenge we addressed was the drainage system for the rainwater. We designed a smart drainage system that moved rainwater through the landscape to avoid soil erosion and help the plants grow happily. Koi ponds provide another spot of tranquility, attracting local wildlife and serving as a focal point for residents to gaze upon and reflect. This ended with a beautiful Zen garden that served the client’s mission of finding tranquility, while enhancing the beauty feel of the property. The client was thrilled with the transformation and felt pleased that the peaceful garden was only a few steps away in their own yard.
