We began by taking stock of the property’s existing topography and native plants to ensure that each phase worked in concert to the other, establishing an ecological network. Along the path, we selected a wide variety of native plants, including ferns, wildflowers, and ornamental grasses, to achieve a seamless integration with nature. The path was built from durable and eco-friendly materials such as locally sourced river stones and decomposed granite, which complemented the natural character of the stream side and its surroundings. One of the most significant challenges we faced was installing an effective means of controlling water flow during heavy rain, which could cause erosion to the path, as well as upset the stream from its natural direction. To solve this issue, we developed a series of retaining walls using natural boulders that stabilized the path while adding interest to the overall look of the path. We also installed drainage solutions that directed excess water away from pathway, providing peace of mind for the client and protecting the stream side’s existing landscape. The overall outcome is a beautifully curling path that encourages you to take your time while wandering the side of the water. We also designed seating areas from reclaimed wood and decorative boulders to take advantage of peaceful locations throughout the path for quiet contemplation and to enjoy the natural surroundings. This , in addition to improving aesthetics, increased the ecological function of the property by creating habitats for local wildlife.
