Working within those parameters, we expertly struck the balance between needing a wildlife-friendly area while also developing an attractive landscape that met our clients' specific needs as they pertained to Northwest DC, Chevy Chase, Rockville and Silver Spring. This started with a deep site analysis to understand the specific context of the property. A varied selection of native, deer-resistant plants was chosen with aromatic herbs, colorful perennials, and durable shrubs. Not only did these choices deter deer, but it also gave us plenty of beneficial pollinators for our backyard. Well, from the best hardscaping with natural stone paths and decorative boulders that complemented the rich plantings. A few of the largest challenges were the existing slope of the yard, which we used to build tiered garden beds to attractively amend drainage, among other things. We built a custom retaining wall made from regional stone that is sustainable and robust, providing a natural slope barrier to combat erosion. The end product is an absolutely stunning oasis with winding paths, colorful foliage, and sitting areas that beg you to just relax and take in the beauty of it all. It was a transformation our clients were very happy with and they now felt they could actually use the outdoor space! Earth Essence Designs produced a quality product that not only fulfilled the functional needs of the clients, but also increased the property’s value in the form of a 'Deer Resistant Backyard.' It speaks to our experience this showcases beautiful sustainable outdoor spaces programmed for the specific challenges that homeowners in the DC metropolitan area face.
