Ross Refuge

Summary: Ross Refuge by Pedersen Associates Located in the tranquil hills of Ross, California, the ‘Ross Refuge’ is a great example of the artistry and skills for which Pedersen Associates is recognized in the field of landscaping. The purpose of this was to develop and outdoor space that would be an outdoor refuge, while being inspired the natural beauty of Marin. Our first step was to evaluate the sloping topography and the existing vegetation of the site; looking for opportunities to enhance the site while keeping it ecologically sound. The included a range of locally and regionally native plants, all of which were selected for their utility, pattern of bloom, and attractiveness to wildlife. This expanded biodiversity and minimized water usage, which is an imperative facet or our on-going overall approach to sustainable landscape practices. The design had many features, however, the prominent experiences were a winding pathway made from locally sourced granite, providing function and beauty to the design. The path was arranged so it directed the client through distinct zones each intended to inspire tranquility and connection to nature. The centerpiece of the space was a beautiful meditation garden, which included a soothing water feature and comfortable seating areas. The largest challenge we faced in this was the erosion from the steep slope of the site, this required us to come up with usable outdoor spaces, while educating the clients the solutions. Our talented team of professionals utilized reclaimed timber to build terracing and retaining wall features which also contribute to the rustic aesthetic of the garden. Ultimately, we achieved a stunning landscape of beauty, diversity, and tranquility, which not only met, but exceeded clients' expectations, providing a future refuge for the family. Through balancing the hardscape and softscape of the design, while being mindful of high-quality sustainable materials and local labor, we created a unified outdoor space that is both pleasing and functional. ‘Ross Refuge’ serves to not only reflect Pedersen Associates' level of quality, creativity, and responsibility to the environment but also serves as a prominent addition to our portfolio and provides a beloved oasis for the clients.
