About This Project

Introduction to the Hillside Residence by Ryan Associates Landscape Architecture & Planning Located in Arlington, the Hillside Residence illustrates the balance between natural beauty and refined design with enhanced living qualities, as brought to life by Ryan Associates Landscape Architecture & Planning. This included a redesign of a difficult sloped landscape into an invigorating outdoor living retreat while reflecting the firm's quality and inventive design. The included a multi-tiered multi-area garden that included native plants to increase biodiversity and minimize maintenance. A variety of permeable pavers were used for walkways, which added visual interest and aided with stormwater management, as the downhill slope created local drainage challenges. The retaining walls were hand-built with stone quarried locally to provide structural support in the landscape while continuing to enhance the outdoors and locale. One of the challenges for this was the steepness of the property, which required extra attention to how the outdoor space would be used. The team accomplished this by providing a tailored terraced design, which included a fire pit nook, a vegetable garden, and a flower bed that blooms throughout the seasons. The unit terrain property were made practical, in a family centered location that deepened the warmth and comfort of the site that was previously unmanageable. Ultimately, the Hillside Residence creates a beautiful landscape that aligns with the client’s goals commensurate with and highlights the hillside site. Through intelligent design and attention to detail, Ryan Associates delivered a that exceeded the client's knowledge and was met with abundant joy in their new outdoor oasis. The exemplifies Ryan Associates design practice in addressing challenges and creating lively environments that inspire outdoor experiences and rich human interaction within livable spaces.
