East Village Zen Garden by BRL LANDesign The East Village Zen Garden neatly illustrates the beauty and tranquility of what landscaping can do nestled in the heart of Chicago. When asked to develop a neglected corner of the backyard into a sanctuary, Brent Riechers Landscape (BRL LANDesign) designed a garden merging nature and design. Some of the highlights include an exquisite pond with koi accompanied by a natural rock waterfall that provides a nice sound when the water spills over. Surrounding the pond is selected river rock and other aquatic plants, making the pond feel like part of the environment. We used salvaged granite pavers, set with soft moss to soften the underfoot experience, to create similar exploratory pathways. The most significant drawback was the existing soil, which we would need to greatly amend so that it would drain properly and provide the support our wide variety of plants would need. To get around this, our team put in a custom mixture of organic compost and native soil to promote healthy growth and sustainability. An enclave for meditation provides a stone bench laid out on stone slabs surrounded by bamboo and flowering perennials for privacy. The finished product is an absolutely stunning sanctuary that aligns the client's request for a private escape along with the craftsmanship and detail-oriented features that BRL LANDesign is known for. The East Village Zen Garden is a proud example of our quality, creativity, and customer service, transforming a regular backyard into a heavenly retreat.
