About This Project

Washington DC Spanish Colonial Horn & Co. (Previously JHLA) is proud to introduce the ‘Washington DC Spanish Colonial’ landscaping showcasing an amazing transformation of the home to combine the classic Spanish Colonial in Washington, DC. Located in a beautiful neighborhood, this was truly all we could hope for, in an area rich with architecture and heritage. We designed the space incorporating features such as terracotta tiles, decorative wrought iron elements, and a selection of native plants, creating an outdoor space that feels inviting and complimentary to the charm of home. We embraced quality, drought-resistant materials (natural stone paths and vibrant mosaics) for long-lasting features; amenities that are both inviting and functional. One major hurdle in the planning process was an area that slopped away from the existing home. Our talented landscape architects designed a series of soft tiered gardens that enhanced visual appeal and improved both drainage and access. Transitioning both upwards and sideways the terraces offered the opportunity to combine attractive retaining walls both horizontally and vertically to produce guest-worthy features rather than plateaus. The scope concluded with an attractive outdoor room that boasts a calm courtyard with a custom water feature, flourishing herb gardens, numerous flower beds contained within our selected shrubbery, creating elegance across all seasons. The vision for this concluded in being fulfilled through our commitment to execution and love for space as not simply a landscape but an outdoor room. This truly demonstrates Horn & Co’s mission of serving the diverse communities of Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, and beyond, and being part of the unique community that exists in nature just as it pertains to landscape. The ‘Washington DC Spanish Colonial’ stands as more than just a landscape, but as an experience merging nature, design, and story, keeping us and our client in-tow with the premise and excited their outdoor room.
