About This Project

St. Mary's River House Horn & Co. (formerly JHLA), is excited to present the new landscape we've developed for the St. Mary's River House a beautiful lakefront retreat in Maryland from which to explore the lake. As this reflects our commitment to quality workmanship and design response, we demonstrate our capabilities in landscape architecture within the unique communities we work in from Alexandria to Rehobeth. The sought to provide a series of spaces in the outdoors that blended the beauty of the natural setting with the utility of the site. The team provided a thorough site analysis, which identified plants and topography that contributed to the design. The design incorporated native area plant selections, as these plants thrive best, and contribute to biodiversity and sustainability. The site utilizes many different hardscape materials, from the custom stone patio made from locally sourced bluestone, which is an elegant yet durable surface for outdoor functions, to the winding pathway made of permeable pavers that allow for water to drain naturally to lead guests through the lush landscape. Another highlight is the water feature that operates optimally with the slope of the site and mimics the river's flow. The water feature serves as a focal point in the landscape and provides enjoyable sounds, which evokes a relaxing atmosphere. The team faced challenges of topography with steep slopes and utilized terracing that provided layers of views to the river and visually interesting spaces. The end result is a holistic outdoor living space with stunning views which incorporates elements of tranquility and elegance that delighted the client and may set a standard for luxury landscape. All design and considerations we proposed were comprehensive as we were able to reach the client's vision for their home. The St. Mary's River House is an oasis of a landscape that Horn & Co. brought to life that resonates with the natural environment and provided additionally an experience for the homeowner, an experience they will enjoy for years to come.
