Located in the beautiful and scenic landscape of Westchester County, NY, 'Edge of the Woods' showcases the craftsmanship and quality that Pierce Hill Design, Ltd. brings to all of its landscaping s. This was commissioned by a thoughtful and discerning client located in the peaceful community of Chappaqua, where nature and the woods meet the back yard. The idea was to develop a hospitable place for outdoor entertaining that seemed to be part of the landscape, while offering function and beauty. We began the design process with an extensive site analysis, distinguishing the site's unique terrain and existing flora so our design would be enhancing, rather than disruptive, to the environment. 'Edge of the Woods' embodies a beautiful multi-level patio made of native bluestone with hand-chiseled edges that creates a gathering space for family and friends. The bluestone accents the colors of the surrounding environment, and holds up well during environmental exposures. The hardscapes of the patio are softened by the addition of perennial plants and ornamental grasses, which we selected for their hardiness and ability to remain low-maintenance, creating a colorful tapestry that changes with the season. One of the challenges of the site was that it was an uneven plane, which required a drainage system. We employed natural drainage using strategically placed dry creek beds lined with river stones, to address uneven areas and deter puddles on the property, also providing a visually appealing design feature. In addition, we completed the site with a cozy outdoor fire pit area with ample seat seating, to entice the clients to enjoy evening gatherings under the stars. At the client's request, the final outcome is a seamless blend of elegance and nature that allows the homeowner's family the opportunity to escape into nature just outside their backdoor.
