About This Project

Serene Cottage Located in the heart of Westchester County, the 'Serene Cottage' , designed by Pierce Hill Design, Ltd., showcases a high level of craftsmanship and an understanding of landscape design. The consisted of a complete transformation of a charming but underutilized garden space surrounding a delightful cottage in Katonah. The site provided us with interesting challenges, including uneven topography and poorly drained soil. We designed the landscape to include a series of tiered garden beds, which were built out of locally sourced stone retaining walls that complement the site and its natural character. Native plants were used to ensure sustainability, resilience, and seasonal color. A lovely pathway of reclaimed bluestone snaked through the abundant plantings to a quaint seating area with a custom crafted cedar bench. Nestled among fragrant perennials and ornamental grasses, this area provided an ideal spot for quiet contemplation or engaging with guests. We also incorporated a small water feature, an elegant stone fountain; although the soothing trickle was a sound pleasure, it also attracted local wildlife. All the while, the addition of energy efficient lighting to the allowed the setting to be enjoyed after the sun set. The final delighted our clients, who now have a beautifully designed garden space that embodies beauty, function, and sustainability.
