About This Project

Before & After - House in the Woods At Paul Hendershot Design, Inc., we strive to seamlessly transition outdoor sites into beautiful landscapes that invite nature in. "Before & After - House in the Woods" demonstrates our commitment to high-quality landscapes for our clients. Located in the beautiful woods of Ojai, this residential property presented ecological and inspirational challenges and requested sustainable landscaping. After site-based visits and discussions with the client, we carefully analyzed the site to determine what areas could be enhanced while protecting the ecosystem. The resulting landscape design comprised plentiful native plants, drought-tolerant shrubbery, and trees that provide shade and privacy. The team also employed built structures out of high-quality materials such as stone sourced within a few miles of the , pathways comprised of gravel and stone, and an ornate wooden deck area provided beautiful spaces in which to experience the intense outdoor beauty surrounding the home. Perhaps one of the bigger hurdles in this was the steep slope leading into the woods behind the house which we reconfigured into a terraced garden. In addition to protecting the exposed slope, retaining walls made of locally sourced stone strategically used as features created a pretty visual interest as you look up through the widows into the space. The residential property initially had irrigation support for gardens and, to help reduce water use while still meeting the client's desires, we specified eco-friendly irrigation systems to support the sustainable measures of the landscape. The visual impact is completed with the once-muted outdoor area transformed into a vibrant yard complete with paths, sitting areas, and flourishing gardens that attract birds and butterflies. Not only has the design created a beautiful outdoor space that enhances the home's curb appeal, but it also captures the qualities of both a tranquil garden retreat for the homeowners and a nature sanctuary they've envisioned. This reinforces Paul Hendershot Design, Inc.'s desire for excellence, creativity, and respect for the natural environment in our communities of Ojai, Ventura, and beyond.
