Opal Cliffs Ocean Oasis K & D Landscaping, Inc. is thrilled to showcase our 'Opal Cliffs Ocean Oasis' , which in the coastal environment, successfully created a stunning landscape in what was once difficult cliffside property. We serve the thriving communities of Santa Cruz County and beyond, and took on the unique challenges of designing and installing a landscape that would work with the steep topography and salty sea air. At the focus of the design is a multi-layered garden of native coastal plants that do well in the area to create a sustainable and low maintenance landscape. We featured plants that are drought tolerant, including California lilac and coastal sage, that would not only add a vibrant color scheme, but attract wildlife, aligning to the ecological balance of this coastal oasis. To balance the intense integrity of the cliffs, we provided a series of stone walls created from locally harvested granite, which complemented the lush garden environment in both color and texture. The addition to the outdoor living space includes a series of pergolas with climbing vines, which allowed for shaded outdoor space to escape the sunlight, while garnering multiple views of the ocean. The winding walkway of reclaimed wood invites guests through the outdoor living space to engage the landscape and its variety. One of the most difficult challenges of the was the erosion of the cliff side. To control the excess water runoff , we collaborated with an engineer to come up with an innovative drainage system to suit the surrounding landscape, as well as using boulders to hold the soil together for prevention of further erosion. This foresight permitted a beautiful garden for a long time that brought a phenomenal landscape aesthetic. The end result is an ocean oasis that serves to blend both function and beauty allowing the client to not only enjoy the space alone, but welcoming family and friends to join the revelers towards peaceful enjoyment.
