Menlo Park 2010 (Published in Sunset Magazine) The Menlo Park 2010 , completed by Keith Willig Landscape Architecture, Inc., is a remarkable integration of art and function that transformed a residence into a beautiful outdoor space. Located in the core of Menlo Park, the highlights a synergy of native plants, sustainable materials, and creative systems. Noteworthy high points of this landscape include exquisite hardscaping comprised of locally sourced stone pathways and terracing, which is designed to work with the site topography, provide drainage solutions, and control erosion. The site slope represented a challenge for the design team, who developed aesthetically pleasing retaining walls that still functioned structurally. The garden includes a wide variety of plantings, including drought-tolerant communally found in California. The use of native grasses, along with flowering perennials, allowed a palette of color and texture over the long seasons of interest while supporting local wildlife and anthropogenic biodiversity. The use of permeable paving at the driveway demonstrated commitment to sustainable practices to allow water to be consumed gradually through the soil. The also included a thoughtful outdoor living space with a custom-built pergola to shield the setting from direct sun and add comfort for entertaining and relaxing, including aesthetically placed lighting to take advantage of the landscape past sunset. At the end of the , happy clients made note of how the finished landscape improved their home visually while enhancing their outdoor lifestyle.
