Before & After - Southern Style At Paul Hendershot Design, Inc., we create beautiful outdoor environments from outdoor spaces. The "Before & After - Southern Style" is representative of our commitment to quality and service. With our clients being part time residents in the beautiful areas of Ojai, Santa Barbara and beyond, we were excited the opportunity to design a Southern-style garden that was meaningful to them and matched the beauty of their surroundings. As the got underway, the task ahead of our team was clear: our clients had a backyard space that had gone unattended for years; it was cloaked with weeds and some outdated features. To begin, we assessed the site, identified site elements that could be improved upon, then we listened to our clients speak their vision for an outdoor living environment that was peaceful, but also lively. After establishing an understanding of our clients' thoughts the , we used local materials in the design, creating calm stone pathways through out the landscape, establishing habitat areas for local wildlife, planting lush and native landscapes, and also creating a stunning water feature that is visually appreciated and functional. Beyond the many increasingly-favorite Southern-style plants of our clients, including magnolias and gardenias, we were mindful in choosing the plantings in the new design; we wanted to select materials that would thrive in Southern California's hot summers while using minimal water. Our team effectively navigated site challenges including variances in grade in the landscaping and limited sunlight which required multiple soil levels to maximize plant health and functionality. In the end we arrived at a beautiful and inspiring transformation; the finished design is a seamless blend of the historic, Southern-style garden and a functional living space. Our clients now have an expansive outdoor space for vacationing and events, where seating is plentiful in the garden and amidst colorful and lively flower beds. Our clients were ecstatic with the , telling us they now love being outside and the design has become their favorite outdoor living room.
