About This Project

Before & After - Old Ojai Paul Hendershot Design, Inc. is proud to present "Before & After - Old Ojai": a dedicated to the revitalization of an outdoor space that is located in the heart of Ojai. This was both a test and a pleasure, since we were eager to breathe new life into a tired landscape while preserving the area’s coastal charm. The started with a dated yard, consisting of overgrown shrubs, old hardscaping, and hardly any usable space. With the homeowners, we discussed their wishes for a calm and inviting retreat that captured Ojai's natural beauty. We utilized a collection of drought-tolerant native plants, such as lavender, succulents, and California poppies, while also generating a colorful patchwork of plants that would thrive in the local area with little water. Next, we created a thoughtful parent, with installed a beautiful flagstone patio that would be ideal for outdoor entertaining, in tandem with a custom fire pit, offering warmth and camaraderie. Additionally, we designed curved paths with solar lighting, which guided guests through the outdoor space at night...creating a sense of wonder. With objectives in hand, such as a sloped yard and poor soil, we came up with a detailed drainage strategy, along with a soil improvement strategy, to ensure a sustainable new yard. As a result, we delivered a classic balance of beauty and function that exceeded expectations of the homeowners. The d Before & After - Ojai... exemplifies our commitment the quality of craft, with thoughtful and unique design, providing our client with the outdoor living space they imagined, but also contributing their natural environment.
