An excellent example of this is the Boulder/Rock Retaining Walls we just finished. Graham Kimak Landscape Designs serves the upscale areas of Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina. We were asked to design and construct a long-lasting boulder/rock retaining wall that was attractive and resolved serious erosion problems. The first step in this process was meeting with the client to get an understanding of their goals for the and the topographical issues that had to be overcome. Natural boulders and rocks were specifically selected for quality, while also acquiring from local quarries to ensure a good match with the surroundings. In addition to being good practice in a "green" world, using native boulders and local stones also provides character to the installation. Each stone has also been individually selected for size, texture, and color; all great combinations to provide a good look for the natural environment. One of the (if not the) biggest problems we had was the site had a steep gradient, which could cause erosion issues and limits useful areas for outdoor use. Taking this into account, our professional team designed and constructed a multi-tiered retaining wall system to provide function and beauty. The walls were created using a dry-stacking technique to allow drainage but provide stability. This method and the planting around the walls allows them to fit well with the rich coming landscape. In the end, the final structure surpassed what the client/best hoped for. The natural rocks did a fantastic job of managing the landscapes, while creating a beautiful focal point for the property. The natural stones create a much cozier feel, as native plantings were carefully thought through for use within the design. Our client was excited they invested in the new retaining wall, as it made a very nice visual change for their space; as well as making it easier for family and friends to use the area to gather outside.
