Play Areas by Graham Kimak Landscape Designs At Graham Kimak Landscape Designs, we believe outdoor spaces should not only be functional but also extraordinary, especially when it comes to play spaces for children. Recently, we had the opportunity to transform a residential property in Upstate South Carolina into a play area designed to stimulate creativity and exploration. This had its special circumstances, including sloping grades and existing trees that had to be worked into the design. Our experienced team put together a design plan that incorporated tiered play spaces that used the natural slopes for safe climbing, sliding, and swinging that could be maintained and enjoyed without concern to safety. Durable materials would be used, while eco-friendly options were a priority. Choosing rubber mulch for safety surfacing, as well as stone of local origin for pathways, we were able to ensure the area would not only fit naturally into the existing landscape but also become valued natural resources for the property and us. The end product has a complex play space made of sustainable wood with slides, climbing walls, and swings with plant material surrounding them. We introduced native plant material that creates a wide variety of extraordinary blooms and textures while reducing the need to maintain the area. In many places where climbing and jumping would occur we developed seating for parents using natural stone and wood which would provide seats to comfortably supervise. The very happy client stated the transformation exceeded their expectations. This play space is intended to encourage physical activity and imaginative play but it has made a special space for families to get together and for the community to gather.
