Cottage Style Curb Appeal & Backyard by Hortus Design Sustainable Landscapes | This Old House The 'Cottage Style Curb Appeal & Backyard' by Hortus Design Sustainable Landscapes, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, turned an unassuming residence into a quaint escape that balances form with function. The goal of this was twofold: to improve the first impressions of the home and to have a place in your backyard that becomes a set of daily rituals of relaxation and gatherings with friends and family. They donned their best garden party outfits, to revel in eye-popping native plantings, plentiful seasonal color, and the appealing hardscaping matched with expansive outdoor living space. Material selection was critical; locally sourced stone was used to pave the paths to ensure durability and a natural appearance in keeping with the architectural style of the home. Architectural shapes like the rusticated wooden trellises, clothed in climbing vines, or the rustic seating area, which is formed by reclaimed wood, brought vertical interest, a cottage feel, and a sustainable touch to the garden. The sawtooth grading in this case made for some solutions to erosion and creating a level planting space on the slopped ground. Our team innovatively terraced these garden beds for aesthetic appeal while also allowing good drainage and accessibility. A rainwater collection system pointed out the importance of this attitude by providing the client with the means to sustain his garden without leaving his ecological footprint. The end result of this was everything the client could have hoped foran inviting, colourful landscape full of seasonally flowering plants and perfect for backdrop sessions of family get-togethers! The ease of the transition from curb appeal to back yard oasis is such that both neighbours and visitors can enjoy nature at their doorstep.
