About This Project

Shady Front Yard & Yard with Play Area Designed by Hortus Design Sustainable Landscapes, this large landscaping reformed a typical suburban property in Silicon Valley into a beautiful, cohesive space. We designed a shaded space focused on providing respite from the heat and sun, and a safe, controlled environment for children to explore, play, and learn. We started the by examining the existing landscape and what it was lacking, realizing that it needed more shade and usability in the space. Native trees were chosen for their ability to provide canopy cover, limit heat, and support biodiversity such as oak and redwood native to California. A large portion of the environmental footprint was mitigated by the new use of permeable paving materials, allowing rainwater to percolate to the surrounding vegetation rather than causing runoff issues. The front yard was revised to include an inviting colored flowering shrub and perennial pathway that added curb appeal, but also became a local destination for pollinators. They created a family paradise in the backyard with a custom play area with natural wood play structures, rubber soft surfacing and shaded seating for parents. One of the biggest challenges was to level the ground that was not only uneven but that also sloped off in places helping make unique grading solutions are more than just creative. Our talented team worked around this by using tiered planting beds, creating visual interest as well as aiding drainage. The end product is flush in detail as it is a landscape that serves the client's needs for recreation and tranquility. With an emphasis on high quality, sustainability, and craft we have created a place that will be timeless and in use for many years to come.
