by: (One, Two Design) Terraced Backyard with Deck & Pergola Terraced Backyard with Deck & Pergola by Hortus Design Sustainable LandscapesCompleted by Hortus Design Sustainable LandscapesThis Silicon Valley and Peninsula embodies the essence of outdoor living while responding to the natural topography_ The beauty of this bespoke space is in both the function and form whilst creating the calming presence the client required for the transformation. This was planned and executed with great care, but the property had a slope! Working with these natural patterns, our team designed a series of terraces in strong but sustainable materials: native stone and reclaimed wood. The whole design was planted with native plants at all levels that would use low water, and promote local fauna. A sensational multi-level, sustainably harvested hardwood deck is at the center of the design. This wide area is ideal for entertaining and al fresco dining, with expansive views of the landscaped terraces below. A well-built pergola extends off the deck offering shaded comfort automatically becoming a functional feature filled with climbing vines and lighting. By paying close attention to drainage and sediment control, we managed to design the relatively flat areas where water naturally flows to secure the long-term permanence of all the landscaping elements. The end result is a delicate balance of natural beauty and sustainable practice that has turned the client's backyard into a coveted attraction that they can visit with their feet and be at one with the forest while embodying their lifestyle through the values that they uphold. The client was overjoyed with the end result, and we believe our commitment to quality craftsmanship and sustainable practices has now allowed them to enjoy a luxurious yet nature-filled outdoor space.
